AHSS Presents - a conversation with: Ian Burrows - 'Pathetic!': Trauma, Drama, Teaching and Trigger Warnings

In this talk Ian Burrows will examine some of the ways in which traumatic material is treated as coercively comic on stage, in the lecture theatre, and in the media. He will look back at his own teaching, using the literary material from that teaching to think through the media coverage that attends the use of 'trigger warnings'. There will then be a Q&A in which participants can interrogate and/or reflect upon the ethics and power dynamics involved in presenting traumatic experience on stage and in the classroom.
Bio:
Ian Burrows is a Fellow of Clare College, and the author of Shakespeare for Snowflakes: On Slapstick and Sympathy. He completed his PhD at Anglia Ruskin in 2013. He has taught at ARU, Cambridge, and Bristol, and his research focusses on the non-verbal aspects of early modern drama.
