AHSS Presents – a conversation with: Emma Griffin 'Women, Men and Money in Victorian Britain'

The Victorian period is feted as a unique – if short-lived – moment of British greatness.  A period of sustained rises in GDP, real wages, and all other measurable elements of economic measurements.  But what did this period of ‘British greatness’ mean for women?  And, conversely, how does this picture of Victorian prosperity change if we include the female experience?  In this lecture, Emma Griffin puts the women and the family in the centre of the analysis, and in the process offers a very different history of Victorian Britain. 

Bio 

Emma Griffin is Professor of British History at UEA.  She is the author of five books, including most recently Bread Winner: An Intimate History of the Victorian Economy and is currently writing a global history of industrialisation for Penguin Press.  She is the President of the Royal Historical Society and a co-editor of the Historical Journal.
